NetherRealm Studios has released a few new trailers for the upcoming release of Mortal Kombat X, which will hit the PC and consoles on April 14th, but they are not character trailers. The new videos, especially the first one, is worth looking at.
Ed Boon and other key figures associated with NetherRealm Studios gave a behind-the-scene look of Mortal Kombat X’s development and explain that competitive gaming is a key figure, which is understandable because the series centers on one-versus-one fighting.
Rhetorically asking, what’s the point of a fighting game if a developer does not promote that aspect?
The developer takes online competitive mode one step further by introducing its “Faction War” option.
You can play “Faction War” by yourself or with other player as a member of one of the five factions: White Lotus Society, Special Forces, Lin Kuei, Black Dragon, and Brotherhood of Shadows. Mortal Kombat fans and veterans should already be knowledgeable on those groups.
If you do not remember, then you should know that most of the characters introduced throughout the series belonged to one of those five factions.
Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Kai (introduced in Mortal Kombat 4) are members of the White Lotus Society.
The video reveals that Raiden is the White Lotus Society’s founder.
Sonya Blade, Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Cyrax (since Mortal Kombat 4), and Kenshi (since Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance) belong to the Special Forces. Hsu Hao from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance was classified as Special Forces, but was a double agent for the Red Dragon.
The Special Forces have been the antithesis to the Black Dragon since the first title.
Now Cassie Cage, the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, is the newest member to join the Special Forces.
Sub-Zero, Noob Saibot, Smoke, Cyrax, and Sektor represent the Lin Kuei, which originally plead allegiance to Outworld before Sub-Zero wrestled control from Sektor.
It is effectively the neutral faction.
Kano, Kabal, Kira, Kobra, and Jerek represented the Black Dragon Syndicate. This is the one human group that aligned itself with Outworld until Kabal took over in Mortal Kombat: Deception and aligned with Havik.
Shang Tsung represented the Brotherhood of Shadow, but now Quan Chi represents the group.
Faction War allows you to gain points for your group on a weekly basis, where the group with the most points at the end of the week will gain faction-specific rewards.
WB Games, Mortal Kombat X’s publisher, is also releasing a “Kollector’s Edition” and there are a few versions to choose from. If you buy the version by Coarse, a Scorpion figurine will be included with the game.
