So you’ve started dating a martial artist. Why not? They’re fun, fit individuals who can’t get enough of continuous self-improvement. What’s more attractive than that?
Of course, along with the perks of dating a martial artist comes certain quirks that make them more endearing (at least some of the time anyway) to you.
1) They’re always “training”.
If you ask them why they haven’t answered their phone in the last 30 minutes or why they can’t go with you to that exciting office party, chances are, it’s probably because they’re “training”.
Tip: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Why not tag along on their next training session and see what all the fuss is about.
2) They’re always talking about “training”.
If they’re not at training, they’re always talking about training. Regardless of your interest in martial arts, they’re ready to tell you about how they were able to finally pull off a double leg takedown during MMA training. Yay! (Seriously, what is a double leg takedown?)
Tip: Since you can’t stop them from talking about what they love, ask them more about martial arts. Who knows, you might find it interesting!
3) They are always trying a new technique on you (playfully, of course).
Whether it is a new armbar or a new clinch technique, your favorite martial artist will always be trying something new on you in a playful manner. Of course, they just want to perfect their technique on their chosen dummy (you!).
Tip: Make them happy by “letting” them try their new technique softly and gently (and in slow motion!)
4) You always get bone-crushing hugs.
When you’re training to constantly use pressure against an opponent, it eventually becomes a habit – even when you aren’t training. Unfortunately for you, every hug turns into some kind of pressure pass.
Tip: Frame, frame, frame! As your significant other goes in for a hug, stick an arm out near his or her neck to create space. Wriggle your way out at your own pace.
5) They’re always displaying their love for martial arts.
Whether it’s a t-shirt or their Facebook profile picture, martial artists aren’t shy about declaring their love for their art. Why would they? When you work hard enough for something, you should be proud of it.
Tip: Instead of making fun of your significant other for being borderline obsessive, be more supportive! After all, he’s working on becoming the best version of himself – for you.
6) They always ask you to “train” with them.
The more invested you become in a relationship with a person, the more you want to spend time with them. So, its only natural that your significant other would ask you to come with them to the gym.
Tip: Instead of getting annoyed, think of it as a good thing. They probably just want to spend more time with you.
7) They’re always carrying big bags.
Martial artists need a bag with enough space to store all their gear. Whether it’s a BJJ gi, a pair of boxing gloves, shin guards or all of the above, these are all essentials that every martial artist needs! Unfortunately, these bags are so big that it makes it almost impossible to walk and hold hands at the same time.
Tip: Since you have no choice in the matter, why not put some of your heavier things inside your significant other’s bag. There’s enough room for it anyway!
8) They’re always quoting a famous martial artist.
Inspirational Bruce Lee post on Facebook; check. Motivational Muhammad Alipicture on Instagram; check. Your significant other has his martial arts heroes and isn’t afraid to show how much he respects their philosophies.
Tip: Ask him more about these famous martial artists and what made them so famous. Perhaps you might find yourself inspired as well!
9) They’re always eating clean.
If they’re not cutting weight for a tournament or fight, they’re watching what they eat because they know how much food can affect their performance in the gym.
Tip: Try eating clean! Not only is it better for your health, but it also will make you feel great. Why not start with one clean meal a day and work your way towards more later on? The earlier in life you start, the better it will be for you in the long run.
10) They’re always shadow boxing.
Be it in the bedroom, shopping mall or bathroom, you’ll always find your significant other shadow boxing. Why not? Practice is the key to success after all — even when they’re not at the gym.
Tip: Take a picture or video when they’re not looking. This is not only for your entertainment, but also for their learning purposes. How else can they correct their form?
Tell us, can you relate to any of these?
